Go Visit...Capture the Gavel!!!
The Traveling Gavel is one of the newest forms of brotherhood between the clubs of Division H in partnership with District 84 Club Ambassador Program. The purpose is to encourage clubs to visit each other, share talents and knowledge of communications and leadership, and extend the fellowship of the Toastmasters organization. The game is on-going throughout the year and any club within the Division is able to "capture" it.
How to Capture the Gavel
- Two (or more) Toastmaster members, from the same club, visit the target Club who currently holds theTraveling Gavel. Please call/e-mail ahead and announce your intent to visit.
- The visiting Toastmasters must participate in the target Club meeting, complete the District 84 Club Ambassador Program Form and submit to cedriccscfl@gmail.com
- One Member in Primary Role: Speaker, Evaluator or Table Topics Master
- One or more Members in a Secondary Role: Timer or Table Topics Participant
- Other Roles count towards the Club Ambassador Program
- Once the gavel is captured it is taken back to your club until another club visits with 2 or more members. As soon as the Traveling Gavel is captured, the visiting Toastmasters must announce the Gavel's new place of residence by completing the Record of Capture. The current location will be tracked and posted on this website.
Gavel Protocol
There is specific protocol that must be followed in order to capture the gavel:
- Only clubs that meet at least twice a month and members that are in good standing that are eligible to capture the gavel.
- If two or more clubs try to capture the gavel on the same day or evening, the gavel goes to the club which is located the furthest away (this is based on the clubs location, not where the member’s live). It is not necessary for the holding club to tell potential captors if other clubs will also be attempting a capture or to award the gavel only to the club that has contacted them prior to the meeting. If all visiting clubs are equidistant, the gavel should be given to the club sending the most members. If there is still a tie, the gavel should be given to the club that has not previously held it. If necessary, a coin toss or drawing may be held to pick a winner.
Updated:
- Clubs may capture the Gavel multiple times, but at least two clubs must have captured it or one of the clubs must be from a different Area before it can be recaptured.
- If the gavel resides at a club for 4 weeks, it will be relocated by the Division Governor to a club of their choosing.
The Reward
- Every club that captures the Traveling Gavel will receive a $25 Gift Card (one time) from the Division Governor.
- The club that captures the gavel the most times as recorded on the website as of March 30, 2012 will receive an engraved gavel with their club's name at the Division H Spring Contest.
